How I Wrote a Book By Accident | From Seed to Soap

To be fully transparent—when I began writing From Seed to Soap, I fully intended it to be a simple printable guide. I had left my teaching career a couple of years prior and was falling in love with learning how to be self-sufficient.

I was learning all the ins and outs of natural soapmaking - from hundreds of resources - because what I wanted to do wasn’t available in a book or single resource. My Type B self had hundreds of post-it notes, printed out soap formulations, and a solid attempt at record-keeping via a Google spreadsheet. It was a mess that I began to organize.

As a professional educator turned homeschool mom and soap enthusiast, I decided to share my love of teaching others by writing and sharing downloadable guides—including one for this soap journey I was on.

I’ve spent most of my life reading curriculum and having to write my own because—for the most part—most isn’t written in the most logical or efficient way to teach others. When I was looking for a soap making book, same, just same.

After months of writing (I didn’t want to put out anything sub-par), I kept adding "just one more chapter." After all, if I explained ABC, why not explain DEF and XYZ?

Too long to print at home. I made the decision to release it as a professionally bound soft and hardcover book on Amazon. (It’s actually cheaper to purchase the book on Amazon than it is to print a copy at a local store!)

Self-publishing has been an amazing success, and I truly love knowing that it sits on the shelves of real makers who use it and love it every day.

My Digital Bookstore

As my audience grew, I realized that many "makers-to-be" lived in areas of the world where buying a physical book from Amazon wasn’t available. To ensure everyone could join this journey, I built my own virtual bookstore.

And just to be clear: this is a real book—not a workbook or a curriculum unit. It is a comprehensive book (186 pages) written by an elementary teacher who blossomed into a middle school, high school, and adult educator. It’s designed to be deep, straightforward and easy to reference.

The Heart of the Journey

The long and winding roads in life are weird, and each choice is interconnected. None of this would exist without a heart journey that led me to step away from my teaching career—asking questions about the "box" the educational world puts me (and all of us) in.

Thinking back on all the pitfalls and wins during my twelve-year public education career and searching for a way to change the outcomes for my own children, I ruminated on what education truly is and how—and what—I wanted to teach my own children.

This thought process led me to remove the “box,” recycle it, and pursue a wilder, more untamed form of life—one that nourishes both the soul and the mind. For myself and my children.
